I created the fireflies out of construction paper, cut out where their light would be and laminated each one.
Then I took some extra laminate and made a pocket on the back for their light to slide in and out of. It is a little difficult to see since the laminate is clear, but I cut out a piece of laminate that was a little bigger than the "light" I would be sliding in and out and then taped it onto the back of the firefly. The picture below is the back of the firefly, with the "light" halfway into (or out of) the pocket. There is also a piece of Velcro on the back of the fireflies head so it will stick to the flannelboard.
I start with all five fireflies lit up and when everyone sneezes, I quickly pull out the light from one of them until none of the fireflies are lit up.
Five little fireflies blinking in the night
Looking at the glow of each other's light
Then whoosh went the wind and whistle went the breeze
and out went a light with great big sneeze
(Then the same verse for four, three and two)
One little fireflies blinking in the night
Looking at the glow of his very own light
Then whoosh went the wind and whistle went the breeze
and out went his light with great big sneeze

Welcome to Flannel Friday, Alison! I tweeted a link to your post for you, just so you know.
I love your rhyme, especially the sneezing. Kids love a fake sneeze. And the idea with the firefly light is so cute!
I am just brainstorming here, but I wonder if it would be possible to do this with one of this battery-operated lights (like leave the spot clear) and turn it off and on? That might be insane and over the top though. But EPIC?
I love the look of your blog, Alison. And welcome.
This is super cute! Now, tell us how you made the dust bunnies. MUST HAVE DUST BUNNIES! :-P

Welcome aboard! LOVE this idea for "blowing out" the fireflies. You are making me think what else we can use this technique for!
